Background: Simon Tarses was born in 2348 in the Martian Colonies. At the age of 18 he joined Starfleet, choosing to serve as an enlisted man rather than take the four years needed to go through the Acadamy and become an officer. However, on his application to join Starfleet he lied, identifying his father as being half Vulcan. His paternal grandfather is a Romulan. This came to light in 2367 when Admiral Nora Satie was trying to uncover a non-existant conspiracy on board the U.S.S. Enterprise-D, where Tarses was stationed. Admiral Thomas Henry called off her witch hunt, but not before it had nearly destroyed Tarses' career.
Thankfully for Tarses, Starfleet can be forgiving. In a series of later hearings, the nature of his background was explored. There were still those who wanted him to leave Starfleet, but there were others who recognised that a seventeen year old filling out an application less than eighteen months after the Romulans ended fifty-three years of isolation might have a reason to fear revealing the truth. Ultimatly, he stayed in Starfleet, but has had to live with his youthful indiscresion.
The hearings themselves caused him to lose his post on the Enterprise. His postings since then have been markedly less prestigous. He served at a number of starbases and outposts until he finally decided to not reenlist in 2373. Then the Dominion War happened. The need for able bodies caused him to be recalled. He served onboard the medical starship U.S.S. Houlihan as a corpsman. Since the war has ended, he found himself once again serving at starbases. Then the Chief Medical Officer of the then-in-development Cochrane was looking for staff, and he specifically sought out Tarses, wanting to give him another chance on board an exploratory ship.
Personality: At one time Simon Tarses was an eager and enthusiastic young man. The past twelve years have taken their toll on the still young man. He has only recently turned thirty, but he feels much older. His feelings for Starfleet alternate between gratitude and bitterness, much as Starfleet has been inconsistent towards him. He recognises the chance that has has given him though, and he wants to do his best to live up to the faith Jayngo has shown in him.
