Background: The Starfleet lineage of the Sulu family is a strong one; starting with Hikaru as the Navigation Officer for the original U.S.S. Enterprise and later Captain of the U.S.S. Excelsior, to his daughter Damora as the Helmsman of the U.S.S. Enterprise-B, to her son Hiromi as the helmsman of the U.S.S. Vanguard. It was only natural that Kazuta follow in the family tradition, entering Starfleet Academy at the age of seventeen. Unlike his predecessor's, however, he found he held his mother's skill in the sciences, making him the "black sheep" of the lineage. This did not keep his family from being proud of him as four generations gathered for his graduation, with the infamous patriarch presenting the graduation speech to that year's class.
Having excelled in the area of Astrometrics and Stellar Cryptography, Sulu soon found himself working with Starfleet Intelligence to develop strategic locations to defend against and take the battle to the newly emerging Dominion threat. As the war fully bloomed, his experience was expanded to encompass developing detection devises for Founder shapeshifters, xeno-research on Jem' Hedar soldiers, and cell-regeneration experimentation with members of Starfleet medical. By the time the Federation won the fight, Sulu was a full lieutenant with field and lab experience to make him the first-pick of any ship.
Even with that opportunity, however, Sulu instead chose to spend the next four years back at Starfleet Academy, teaching the next generation of Science officers, now that the supply was dwindled due to the war. It wasn't until the Cochrane's Chief Science Officer was offered that he felt the desire to go back to the stars. His first decision was to recruit his two star pupils - the newly graduated Sarjenka and fourth-year cadet Santiago - to work in his division.
