Background: David Nganga was born in Kenya, on Earth, forty years ago. He entered Starfleet Acadamy 22 years ago, being a younger contemparary of William Riker.
He started out as an Operations/Engineering Officer. His first tour was on a deep space exploration ship, the U.S.S. Decker. He went on to serve rotations on the U.S.S. Garrett and the U.S.S. Hawking. He was then tapped to serve as Chief Engineer on the then new Deep Space Two. As such, he was far away from the Borg encounter at Wolf 359.
His handling of authority on DS2 was noticed by Zarda Milton, the captain of the U.S.S. Hyperion during a stop, and Nganga was hand picked to serve as the next Executive Officer of that vessel. He comported himself well during the Domion War; however, afterwards, the Hyperion had to be mothballed. The extensive damage and repairs had been to great.
Nganga was assigned to the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards, where he was assigned to oversee the construction of the U.S.S. Cochrane. He had reservations about having so many civilians on-board, but wasn't against the idea either, so he didn't fight the design at all. He's wary and cautious. As such, he's been a firm advocate of all of the redundant systems and safety measures and fought against anyone claiming they were unnecassary. With his Ops/Engineering backgound, he basically saw this as one of those "I don't know if this is gonna work, but I'll give it my best shot" types of situations. When the job was completed, Nganga turned down his own command to serve as XO aboard the Cochrane.
